Biodiversity Conservation


  • 1999-2009. Direction (with I. Izquierdo & M.N. Zurita) of the BIOTA project for implementing a Biodiversity Data Bank in Canary Government (Orden de 1 de junio de 1999.

  • 2002-2008. Head of Biodiversity of the Canary Island Government. (Dirección General del Medio Natural de la Viceconsejería de Medio Ambiente)

  • 2003. Canarian Strategy of Biodiversity. Coordinator (with José G. Casanova) of actions to elaborate the texts. The public process associated to the elaboration was conducted by the scientific coordinator Wolfredo Wildpret de la Torre and Mª Victoria Martín Osorio. The final report have three parts: DIAGNOSTICO, MEDIDAS and PROCESO.

  • 2002-2004. Coordinator (with S. Fajardo) of the project to evaluate the state of conservation of the endangered species included in the official list of threatened species in Canary Island.

  • 2003-2007. Coordinator (with M. Arechavaleta) of the institutional program for monitoring the endangered species officially declared as threatened in Canary islands (SEGA: programa de seguimiento de especies amenazadas).

  • 2004-2005. Coordinator (with M. Arechavaleta) of the international Project CENTINELA, developed in Canary, Azores and Madeira Archipelagos with the goal of monitoring and planning the recovery of macaronesian endangered species.

  • 2004-2005. Coordinator (with I. Izquierdo) of the international Project “ATLANTICO“, developed in the macaronesian archipelagos of Canary, Azores, Madeira and Cabo Verde, with the goal of develop a Biodiversity Data Bank and elaborate the first check-list of terrestrial species.

  • 2004-2006. Coordinator (with E. Urquiola) of the international Project “MACETUS“, to study the population structure, distributions, displacement and habitat use of Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus), Pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus), Bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) and the Atlantic spotted dolphin (Stenella frontalis) in Canarias, Azores and Madeira. The project was implemented in Azores, Madeira and Canary Islands.

  • 2005. Supervision of the “Manual del cazador en las Islas Canarias” (Hunter handbook in Canary Islands), edition of 2005.

  • 2006-2008. Coordinator of the international Project “BIONATURA”,  to conserving and maintaining the coherency  Nature 2000 network of protected areas of the European Union, implemented in collaboration of the Madeira and Azores Archipelagos.

  • 2006. Elaboration (with A. Vera & M. Oramas) of the technical proposition to declare new Special Protection Areas (SPAs), resulting of the analysis of the  “International Birds Areas” identified in the Canary Islands by the ONG SEO/Birdlife .

  • 2006. Elaboration (with A. Vera) of the technical proposition to the declaration of three new Special Areas of Conservation (SACs), as part of the process of designing compensatory actions due to the forecasting impacts of coastal infrastructures in Tenerife island.

  • 2005-2009. Directions (with S. Hernández, M.N. Zurita & E. Ojeda)of the working teams to editing the several recovery plans of threatened species, following the guidelines to its elaboration referenced in MARTIN et al (2005) and SILVA et al (2008)

  • 2009. Coordination (with the director G. Viera) of the working teams to implement the LIFE project INAGUA. The project will focus on the restoration of endemic Macaronesian pine forests of Gran Canaria, which were severely damaged by forest fires, and actions to improve the conservation status of other flora and fauna species threatened by forest fires.
